Portal FAQ
Why is my streaming stuttering?
Portal is developed natively using Apple frameworks and deeply optimized for Apple Silicon chips. If you experience stuttering, it’s almost always due to network configuration issues rather than the app itself. Common causes include:
Wi-Fi channel switching: Your Apple Vision Pro frequently changes Wi-Fi channels to check for AirPlay, Handoff, and Mac Virtual Display signals from nearby Apple devices.
Unstable Wi-Fi connection: For game streaming, connection quality matters much more than raw speed. If a packet is lost, it can’t be recovered, which leads to noticeable stutter.
To solve the stuttering issue, you may follow the below steps:
You MUST change the Wi-Fi channel to 149 (5Ghz), or 44 (5Ghz) or 6 (2.4Ghz), as these are the channels that Apple devices use to communicate with each other. If your router doesn’t allow manual channel selection, consider upgrading to one that does. Once set, your Apple Vision Pro will stop constantly hopping between channels.
It's highly RECOMMENDED to connect your game console to the router with an ethernet cable.
Sit closer to your router and make sure you have a good connection.
Turn off location, airplay and handoff receiver services on your Apple Vision Pro.
If you still feel streaming isn’t ideal for your setup, Portal also supports a direct HDMI cable connection. This bypasses network issues entirely and guarantees the smoothest experience possible.
Why can't Portal find my PSN online ID?
PSN online ID is not your login email address. It's the display name that showed on your PSN account.
Your account is set to private. Make sure you set it as anyone can find you.
You can also choose to login to PSN. If you're expierencing login issues, please update the app to v1.10.2 or later.
Why can't Portal pair my PlayStation but xxPlay can?
Make sure the PIN you entered is correct.
Make sure the PIN is under the settings menu of the account that you want to pair.
Make sure there is no port forwarding set for your PlayStation console.
There is a chance that the paring ports are already occupied by other apps (xxPlay). Try to disable and then enable remote paly functionalities on your PlayStation. If it still doesn't pair, try to reboot your PlayStation and the router.
When I try to connect my controller, why does the session quit?
This is because you're connecting the controller to your PlayStation console, it kicks off your remote play session from Portal. You need to pair the controller to Apple Vision Pro via Bluetooth.
Why deosn't Portal respond to my contoller?
Make sure you've updated your visionOS to latest (there was a bug in visionOS 2.2 Developer Beta).
In visionOS shared app space, only the active window can receive controller input. Try to tap Portal window and look at it when using the controller.
Does Portal support DualSense controllers?
Yes. Portal is the only app out there that supports all features of DualSense wirelessly, not even the official Sony remote play app does. These features include haptic feedback, adaptive triggers, motion sensor, light bar sync and touchpad.
Why does Portal crash or run unexpectedly?
Try rebooting your Apple Vision Pro first, as visionOS is very buggy and sometimes system cache would cause unexpected behaviours. If the issue persists, please contact customer support.
Regular releases are pushed to App Store to address known issues. Please always keep Portal up to date.
Why does the frame rate drop sometimes in immersive mode?
This is a combination of visionOS bug and temperature mitigation on Apple Vision Pro. To prevent the device overheating, the system will cut the displays' refresh rates to half, from 90Hz to 45Hz, in a standalone immersive space. This can happen more often during frequently opening and dismissing immersive spaces. To prevent this, try the followings:
Close any visionOS built-in virutal environment.
Try to exit and enter the immersive mode, there is a chance that the mitigation won't be executed.
Reboot your Apple Vision Pro and let it cool down for a while.
How to stream HDR video?
HDR signal is only available for PS5 and above consoles. If you're streaming from a PS4 or Xbox, it's not possible for them to output HDR signal.
Make sure HDR is enabled in your PS5, it's recommended to be [Always On].
Make sure HDR is enabled on Portal in the video settings.
When HDR is enbaled both in PS5 and Portal, the streaming video will be in HDR color space, regardless of the game. That means if the game doesn't support HDR, the video will still be tone mapped into HDR color space.
A few games can detect the remote play color space and act accordingly, e.g. God of War Ragnarök can detect if HDR is enabled in the remote play session and output HDR video. However, most games don't take remote play into considerations, and they solely detect the TV/Display format. For these games, you'll need to turn on your HDR TV/Display to trigger the game to output HDR first. Once done, the TV/Display can be turned off. You may also use an HDMI switch to mimic the behaviour of connecting to a TV/Display.
Make sure you check the game display settings to varify if HDR is enabled. Each game is different.
